Growing the Dream \
Kia ora, I'm Gina (Ngapuhi), a dedicated textile enthusiast keen to bring soil-to-soil textile production to Aotearoa's makers.
In my pursuit of a deeper understanding of textiles and their origins, I became increasingly disheartened by the practices of the fast fashion and textile industry. Recycling materials was a positive step, but it left the issue of fabric waste unresolved. With a commitment to finding a better way, I embarked on a mission to return this so-called "waste" to its source – the soil.
My journey began with education. I completed level 3 and 4 Organic Primary Production at the BHU Organic College, learning how to grow and manage crops while preserving and regenerating the soil. Armed with this knowledge and the support of Dr Charles Merfield, I planted 1/2 an acre of linen flax (linseed) and a few hundred square meters of indigo and other dye plants over the 2023/24 summer season and we'll be doing it again 2024/25!
I'd love to invite you to join us on this journey to redefine a textile industry here on our whenua for generations to come. You can help by supporting our work financially, spreading the word to people who need to know about us or by coming along and helping us on the farm! Together, we can shape a greener and more vibrant future.
Did you know we once had a linen industry?
New Zealand's South Island, with its young soils and temperate climate, became an unexpected player during wartime Britain. A short-lived industry was established but peeterd out as war came to an end and international markets could procure flax locally again. Read more here...
